  • Trump, Vance, and Zelensky’s Oval Office Spectacle

    TL;DR (Too Loud; Didn’t Respect)

Zelensky asked for support, Trump demanded applause, Vance offered a lecture, and diplomacy left the room without so much as a press conference.

Ah, diplomacy in the Trump era—a delicate ballet, except the dancers are wearing steel-toed boots and swinging baseball bats. On February 28, 2025, the world was treated to a truly spectacular display of statesmanship as President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened in the Oval Office for what was meant to be a discussion on U.S. aid and minerals. Instead, it swiftly descended into a live-streamed diplomatic brawl that made a WWE match look like a tea party.

“Gratitude Is Mandatory” – The Trump Doctrine

The trouble began when Trump and Vance decided that the real crisis in Ukraine wasn’t the war, the destruction, or the Russian invasion—but rather Zelensky’s apparent failure to grovel with the appropriate level of enthusiasm. “You’re not acting at all thankful,” Trump scolded because nothing says leader of the free world quite like demanding a standing ovation before considering basic foreign policy.

Of course, the former reality TV host and property tycoon took it a step further, warning Zelensky that he was “gambling with World War III.” This is a fascinating choice of words from a man whose international strategy thus far has involved issuing ultimatums with all the subtlety of a wrecking ball.

JD Vance Joins the Show—Slightly Less Orange, Equally Sanctimonious

Not to be left out, Vice President Vance decided to add his own flavour of stern headmaster condescension. “Mr. President, with respect,” he began—a phrase which, in true political fashion, always precedes a complete lack of respect. He then chastised Zelensky for daring to discuss the war in front of the American media because, apparently, transparency is only admirable when it’s coming from a Mar-a-Lago press release.

Vance, who has presumably never had to lead a nation in a full-scale war, also took it upon himself to critique Ukraine’s military situation. “Right now, you guys are going around enforcing conscripts to the front lines,” he remarked as if drafting soldiers in wartime was a bizarre, uniquely Ukrainian concept.

    Zelensky Tries Logic—Bold Move

Zelensky, ever the optimist, attempted to introduce facts into the discussion. He reminded his hosts that Russia has been attacking Ukraine since 2014 and questioned exactly what kind of diplomacy Trump and Vance were advocating. Trump’s answer? Well, apparently, it’s very hard to “make a deal” with someone who openly dislikes Vladimir Putin. Because if there’s one thing Trump values above all else, it’s making sure his pals in Moscow don’t feel too attacked.

Zelensky, unfazed, pointed out that while America enjoys the luxury of an ocean between itself and Russia, Ukraine does not. Of course, this fell on deaf ears, as the Trump administration’s foreign policy is largely constructed on the principle of “Not My Problem.”

The Grand Finale: Zelensky Is Shown the Door

Unsurprisingly, the meeting ended without an agreement. A joint press conference was swiftly canceled, and Zelensky was asked to leave—a move that perfectly encapsulates Trump’s diplomatic style. Why engage in difficult international discussions when you can just eject people from the premises like a misbehaving guest at one of your golf clubs?

The pièce de résistance came later when Trump took to social media to inform the world that he had determined Zelensky was “not ready for Peace” (capital P, of course). You see, in Trump’s mind, war and peace are merely reality show plot points to be controlled at will.

Zelensky, for his part, thanked America and Congress while continuing to advocate for a “just and lasting peace.” This is a noble sentiment—though tragically, in Trumpworld, justice and diplomacy come a distant second to loyalty pledges and performative gratitude.

    Where Does This Leave Ukraine?

With a president who treats foreign policy like a hostage negotiation and a vice president whose key contribution to diplomacy is a stern lecture, Ukraine may find itself in an increasingly precarious position. If history has taught us anything, it’s that Trump’s foreign alliances last only as long as the applause does.

So unless Zelensky starts clapping harder, it might be time for Ukraine to look elsewhere.

    The Dream That Definitely Happened

The following account is entirely imaginary. We have no way of knowing if this dream ever took place, but if it did, it would be a great dream—maybe the best dream…

So we’re in the Oval Office, which I redesigned by the way—very classy, very presidential. Zelensky comes in, doesn’t bow, doesn’t even clap—total disaster. I said, “Where’s the applause, Volodymyr? This is a peace meeting, not a funeral, let’s see some energy!” JD Vance is there too, nodding like a bobblehead from Ohio. He starts telling Zelensky how to run a war, which, honestly, very helpful. Ukraine should be thanking us with parades—gold statues, maybe a nice hotel chain, the Trumpky Towers. That has a nice ring.

Anyway, I offer him a deal. The best deal. Peace in a box, gift-wrapped, beautiful. But he says he doesn’t trust Putin. Big mistake. Huge. I said, “You don’t trust Vladimir? He rides horses shirtless, he’s a strong guy! Very strong. That’s what peace looks like.” And then he says, “Russia invaded us.” Oh please. I’ve had people invade my golf clubs more politely. So I said, “Get out.” Just like that. Fired him from the Oval. JD clapped. Beautiful moment.

Later, I tweeted (Truth Socialled? Whatever): “Zelensky is not ready for Peace.” Capital P. Because real peace starts with respect. And standing ovations. And not complaining all the time. I’m a very peaceful person, the most peaceful. But you’ve got to respect the art of the deal. And the tantrum. Mostly the tantrum.
